Athletic Handbook

EARJ Athletics’ philosophy is in accordance to the school philosophy “We want you to excel in academics, athletics, and the arts while you are at EARJ. And most importantly we care more about your character, what kind of person you are becoming.” Therefore, our athletic activities allow students the opportunity to participate in sports events and provide the opportunity to learn from, to participate in, and to experience team sports.

EARJ participates in several tournaments:

The “Big 8” is an Upper School tournament among eight American schools in Brazil: EAB (Brasília), Graded, PACA, EAC and Chapel (São Paulo), ASA (Paraguay), OLM (Rio) and EARJ. It occurs in November at NR2 and involves students of 14 to 19 years of age. Our students participate in Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball, Boys’ and Girls’ Soccer and Cheerleading Performance.

On the second semester, we participate at the "Big 4" Tournament, which is also an Upper School Tournament among four American schools in Brazil: EAB from Brasília, Graded and Chapel from São Paulo and EARJ. It occurs once a year at NR2, in April, and involves students of 14 to 19 years of age. They participate in Girls’ and Boys’ Volleyball, Girls’ and Boys’ Futsal, Girls’ and Boys’ Softball, and Cheerleading Performance.
For both tournaments, practices take place three afternoons per week per sport.

The “Little 8” is a Middle School Tournament among eight international schools in
Brazil. The competition occurs twice a year at NR2. Participating schools are EAB from Brasília; EAC from Campinas; Chapel, Graded, PACA, St. Paul’s from São Paulo and British and EARJ from Rio. On the first semester - in November, the Little 8 Teams include Girls’ and Boys’ Soccer, and Girls’ and Boys’ Basketball. On the second semester, in May, the tournament includes Girls’ Volleyball and Boys’ Futsal. The “Little 8” Tournaments permit students to play until students turn 15 years of age.

The JV Girls’ Futsal Tournament happens in São Paulo, in May. Participating schools are Chapel, EAC, PACA, Graded and St. Nicholas’ Schools.

This year we will host a Boys’ Volleyball Tournament, which will happen in May, in our school. We will invite Brazilian and International Schools to participate.

EARJ participates at the Annual Friendship Festival which takes place on the last week of May at NR2. The sports offered are Basketball, Soccer and Volleyball in which boys and girls up to 15 years of age can participate. There are six schools involved: OLM and EARJ from Rio, School of Nations from Brasília, Colégio Rio Branco from São Paulo, American School of Santos and ASA from Paraguay. Some cultural, recreational and integration activities are also offered. The philosophy of the Festival is to include everyone and the emphasis is in participating rather than winning. We feel participation in this festival is especially important for our students who
practiced for Little 8 teams but did not have a chance to travel.

During the sports trips we will ensure that there is time each day for study hall, therefore, the teachers have been asked to prepare some work for the students to do at the camp. Of course, this does not substitute the time they will miss from class, however, we feel the learning from sports experience will be powerful for all who participate.

At the Middle School level, it is our desire to increase participation and teamwork and
diminish the emphasis on competition. All students on a team will have a chance to play in a game situation. Selection of the traveling team for the Little 8 will be determined at the last possible moment. Practice takes place two afternoons per week per sport.

At EARJ there are local competitions as well as scrimmage games involving Brazilian
and International schools and/or clubs. These games provide opportunities for all team members to play.

The International Sports Day -“Encontro Esportivo das Escolas Bilíngües”- is a sports day competition for sixth graders that happens every year on the first semester. The students participate divided by colors and mixed with other school students. They compete in Track & Field, Volleyball, Basketball, Futsal, etc. The participating schools are OLM, Swiss School, Escola Corcovado (German School), Licée Moliere (French School), the British School and EARJ.

For both Middle and Upper School, coaches will motivate all students to better their skills and to participate on the teams. Coaches and Athletic Director will work to allow as many students to participate in a sport as is feasible and together with the Principal will work to ensure that student athletes perform well in the classroom and on the playing field or court.

All students may try out for an athletic team, however, continued participation in the sport or activity can only occur if the student remains eligible. Eligibility is determined by a student’s mid-quarter and quarter grades. Academic contracts are used to clarify policies of eligibility. Students are expected to follow standards of behavior and if this becomes a problem, a student may be removed from a team or activity. Final determination of eligibility will be decided by the Principal.

The games provide opportunities for cooperation and teamwork. In addition, it enhances student pride and identification with friends, school, and community and encourages the growth of good citizenship.

All EARJ community and especially parents are welcome to go to the Big 8, Big 4, Little 8, Softball Tournaments and to cheer at our scrimmage games. You can find our schedules in the web site.
Thank you for your support on the athletic program!!
