Via Sapentia Trips
The Via Sapientia trips were a big success! The sixth grade students visited Porto Seguro to learn more about the discovery of Brazil, its effect on the Europeans who arrived and the native people they met.
Highlights of the trip for the students were the visits to the Indian reserve and opportunities to get to know their classmates better during free time at the beach and the hotel.
The seventh grade students visited Ouro Preto and Tiradentes to study the colonial period when these cities were established and grew. The highlights of the trip for was the Congado presentation where students could participate by dancing and playing the drums and other instruments. The performance took an exciting turn when there was a major storm that caused the lights to go out! The Congado presenters took it all in stride as did the students.
The eighth grade students went to Curitiba to study a modern planned city and see how that planning affects targeted quality of life indicators. Highlights included a visit to Citizenship Street, several parks which were quarries then garbage dumps before being converted, a waste management plant for sorting garbage for recycling and a community center in an economically disadvantaged neighborhood. A group of students also stayed in Rio de Janiero and their week included trips to the Indian Museum in Botofogo and the Navy museum. The students learned about Brazil, made new friends, and had a wonderful time together. Thanks go out to all the people who make these trips possible.
